There needs to be some way to explain to the reader what he’s doing, and always waiting until after the fight to explain things, usually including flashbacks to help illustrate exactly when certain explained actions happened, can unnecessarily drag out the scene. So, while it may not logically make sense to do it in the middle of battle, from a narrative standpoint, it helps keep the scene moving at a decent pace.
