It can, yes, but it can’t come back up again unless it decompresses over the course of several days time to release the nitrogen that gets compressed into the bloodstream. Without that, upon surfacing, the nitrogen expands again and causes decompression sickness which is fatal if untreated and the deeper you go the worse the bends get. Some depths can cause fatalities even before you have completely surfaced again causing blood vessel rupture from the gas expansion in the bloodstream. Wouldn’t be a pleasant or pretty death.
